Cement Light Bulbs

November 29, 2010

I found a neat little instructable on making cement light bulbs.  I was currently in a phase where I was interested in industrial-style furnishings.  I wanted to replicate this for my own personal use.  If you follow these instructions, you will have no problem making this for yourself.  I have some more ideas for this in the coming future. But for now, enjoy the photos.

P.S. If you are going to try this I would encourage you to resist the urge to break the bulbs too soon.  Let them cure for about a week in room temperature.  Also, I should have gotten longer lag screws.  My screws only went about an inch and a half deep.  I think they would be a lot stronger if they went deeper.  Despite putting heavy torque on it, I broke one off when I was screwing it in to the 2×6.  Just be careful!

Extension Cord Lamp

November 28, 2010

Every year for Christmas, my siblings and I draw names for the gift exchange.  We typically draw one name and we buy that person a gift.  We then draw another name and we MAKE that person a gift.  This year, I drew my younger brother’s name for the home-made (or John-made) gift.  My big idea was the extension cord lamp.  I basically stole this idea from Craighton Berman in which he calls it the Coil Lamp.  He sells the lamp for $179 USD or $100 unassembled, but I thought I could do better.  Since we have a meager $50 budget, I had to get creative.  I basically used a drill and a Dremel tool to make the base and some hot glue to hold part of the extension cord in place.  I found a hundred-foot extension cord at Wal-mart on Black Friday for about $14.  The Plexiglass frame cost me $8.  I was very proud of my creation.  It looked just like the one online.

I don’t apologize for the messy house.  Those of you with small children know how I feel.  And if you don’t have any kids then you probably already knew that antibiotics cancels out the effectiveness of birth control.  Anyway, I would love to make one of these lamps for myself.  I will definitely prepare better instructions on how to make this lamp if you are interested.  Also, I am planning on making these available if you don’t feel you want to tackle this feat.
